- Red is the bleed edge — your artwork must reach it, and everything out there gets trimmed off.
- Black is the trim line — where the printer actually cuts your cover.
- Blue dashed is the safe zone — keep titles, text and anything important inside it.

Guides
What the template includes
Every template is generated at the exact full-wrap size for your inputs and carries the same five guides our cover creator uses:
-
Bleed edge — red
The outer edge of the file, 0.125 in beyond the trim on every outside edge. Artwork must reach it; nothing important should sit in it.
-
Trim line — dark
Where the printer cuts. Everything outside it is discarded; the cut can drift slightly in either direction.
-
Safe zone — blue, dashed
0.25 in inside the trim line. Keep titles, text and anything critical within it.
-
Spine folds
The two fold lines separating back, spine and front. Spine width is computed from your page count and paper.
-
Barcode zone — hatched
A 2 × 1.2 in area at the bottom-right of the back cover where KDP prints its barcode. Leave it clear.
Pick any trim size above — or arrive from one of our per-size template pages, which link here with your trim size already selected via the ?trim= parameter.
Workflow
How to use the template
Photoshop
- Open the PNG — the canvas is already the right size at 300 DPI.
- Drag the template to the top layer, set opacity to ~50%, lock it.
- Design on layers beneath, keeping text inside the blue dashed zone.
- Hide the template layer, then export as PDF (Save As → Photoshop PDF).
Canva
- Create a custom-size design using the pixel dimensions shown above.
- Upload the template PNG and stretch it to fill the canvas exactly.
- Design under it (send template to front while checking alignment).
- Delete the template, then download as PDF Print.
GIMP
- Open the PNG; confirm Image → Print Size shows 300 DPI.
- Keep the template as a semi-transparent top layer.
- Paint and place text on lower layers, inside the safe zone.
- Toggle the template layer off and export as PDF.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What format is the template?
A PNG at 300 DPI or a PDF, both at the exact full-wrap size for your trim, page count and paper — for example 12.9256 × 9.25 in (3,878 × 2,775 px) for a 6 × 9 in book with 300 pages on white paper.
Do the guide lines end up on my printed book?
Only if you leave them there. Place the template on a top layer while you design, keep your artwork underneath, then hide or delete the template layer before exporting your final cover. The guides are reference marks, not part of your art.
Which page counts does it support?
KDP's full range: 24–828 pages on white paper and 24–776 on cream. If your page count changes later, regenerate — spine width and total size change with it.
Is this different from KDP’s own template generator?
The math is the same — that's the point. Ours runs entirely in your browser, needs no download-and-unzip step, and uses guide colors that match our cover creator, so you can start in one and finish in the other.
